LANET is the computer network for Education and Science in Latvia. It is used in higher educational establishments by their students, professors, scientists and administration. LANET is under the management and development of the Department of Information Technology of the University of Latvia.
The formation of LANET was an important international project for Latvia. It was the initiative of the government of the Republic of Latvia and the Federal Republic of Germany. The Ministry of Education of Latvia had the responsibility for the formation of LANET.
The idea of the formation of the net arose at the meeting of Mr. A. Piebalgs, Minister of Education of Latvia and Dr. H. Riesenhuber, Minister of Science and technology of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn on September 12, 1991. The problems related to design and construction of a computer network for scientific and education purposes in Latvia had been discussed at this meeting. Dr. H. Riesenhuber promised financial support from the government of Germany for acquisition of computer network hardware and software, network project development, training of specialists.
This computer network has been given the international name LANET- Academic Network of Latvia.
Simultaneously in 1992 the Finnish company "OY International Business Machines AB" (IBM) undertook an "academic initiative". Within the framework of this initiative a mainframe computers IBM-4381 with it's software have been installed at the University of Latvia and at the Riga Technical University.
Some individuals and several organizations have given their contribution to the development of LANET as well.
The institutions in Germany which had provided the concrete help are:
Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Schlossplatz, 2440 Münster),
DFN - "Deutsches Forschungsnetz" (Pariser Strasse 44D-1000 Berlin 15).
The project implementation was supervised by the German Embassy in Latvia.
IBM had a department which dealt with implementation of the "academic initiative" program in the Baltic States. The head of this department at that time was Mr. R. Kauhanen.
IBM commenced it's help in June, 1992. Already in the December of 1992 high performance computers IBM-4381 were operational at the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University. Work with the donated hardware from Germany was started in September, 1992. In August, 1993 LANET was connected with the German scientific network WIN.
In 1992, 1993 the government of Germany has allotted 970,000 DM for the development of LANET, the sum has been spent to purchase hardware. 170,000 DM of the total sum is meant for leasing the data transmission line Riga - Berlin in 1993.
The approximate sum of money - 3 million US dollars - has been donated by IBM to the both universities of Latvia.
There are several important applications at the University of Latvia (UL) for development and solutions of which the service of Latvia Academic Network (LANET) is used: Teaching and Learning; Scientific Work; Computerisation of Libraries; Administrative Information System; Information Services; etc.
LANET have currently more than 45 000 academic users, 100 subnets and 4500 workstations.
